Edinburgh Wheels Project’s CSCS Training Success
At the Edinburgh Wheels Project (EWP), we’re always striving to create meaningful opportunities for young people, particularly those who are out of work and eager to make their mark in the construction industry. That’s why we were thrilled to host a training course for 18 to 25-year-olds, aimed at helping them gain their CSCS Green Card—a vital qualification for working on construction sites across the UK.
We put out a call to action, and were delighted when 25 motivated individuals stepped forward. Of these, 14 showed up on the first day, and 11 stayed committed throughout the week-long course. By the end of the program, 10 had passed with flying colours, ready to embark on their careers in construction.
A Week of Hands-On Training
The training program was packed with essential skills and knowledge to prepare participants for the demands of the construction industry. Here’s a breakdown of the course:

This comprehensive week of training equipped participants with a diverse skill set, from manual handling techniques to fire safety protocols, and from abrasive wheel operations to vehicle bankman duties. They finished the week with the confidence and qualifications necessary to secure employment in the construction sector.
From Training to Employment
We’re thrilled to announce that, thanks to the support of our project partners, six participants were offered work on the very next Monday (31st March). They’ve already started at a demolition site in Edinburgh, gaining invaluable hands-on experience. Four of them have joined us on our Coalie Park Project, an exciting venture located on the edge of the Water of Leith, below the Junction Street Bridge.
The success of this training initiative would not have been possible without the support of the Water of Leith Conservation Trust and Balfour Beatty. Their backing allowed us to offer a high-quality program and set up the work opportunities that our participants are now benefitting from.
Looking Ahead: Coalie Park Community Hub and Skate Park
The Coalie Park Project is a special one for all involved. This new development will include an outdoor community hub and skate park, a much-needed resource for the local community. By providing young people with the training and skills to work on this project, we’re not just empowering individuals, we’re also contributing to the regeneration and enrichment of the local area.
As we move forward, we’re excited to continue creating opportunities for young people in Edinburgh and beyond. The success of this training program is just the beginning, and we look forward to supporting even more participants in the future.
